I asked my Mom's primary care doctor. I always phrase it like this, "Where would you send a family member for rehab?" There were two in our town (we were new there) one was awful the other was fantastic. He helped us make the right decision.

The hospital will have recommendations, but you are wise to check around. Try using your phone book and ask each place if they have references. If they can't give names, ask about all qualifications and tour each facility. There are many places where you can find rehab facilities online, but that doesn't give you a clue to their quality. I recommend you using the AgingCare.com site. Go up to the senior living section and select rehabilitation centers. Once you plug in the zip code of the area you are looking for listings will be available and you can be connected to talk to somebody. You can also check with your state aging site (go to your state site and type "aging" in the search box. See what links you find and also, click on your local ombudsman site that you'll see listed. You'll find many valuable contacts there.
Good luck. I know this is stressful.
