A friend has a neighbor in the apartment next store whose daughter and a boy friend moved in with him. He tells her he is afraid of her and everyday the daughter leaves for work he comes over to use my friend's phone to check his bank account. He wants to go to the nursing home but his son tells my husband that his sister doesn't want him to do that. The neighbors hear her yelling at him. Hubby called area on aging he doesn't qualify to go to the nursing home for free and they are waiting on the man to get back to them. The daughter is a CNA at a different nursing home than the one he wants to go to. Calling someone on them could just make more problems.

The situation could be the opposite of what he describes. Some elderly people become mean, spiteful and delusional and if they were narcissistic before that trait may be amplified with age. Your friend apparently only knows one side of the story. I doubt the elderly mans daughter and her boyfriend want to live under her fathers nose. It is likely they are there to help and protect him from himself. So far as her yelling at him, there may be a good reason for that such as him doing things that are dangerous, abusing her, or her getting enough of being mistreated by the person she is giving up her life and privacy to care for. IF the elderly gentleman truly wants them out it would only take a phone to the local authorities. IF he truly wants to go to assisted living and doesn't have the funds to go a nice place there are options to facilities that are income based. He does have options but perhaps he enjoys the attention of playing victim and/or he is paranoid and delusional.

I agree. He needs to help himself if he really wants out of the situation. He is in his seventies and in his right mind. The area on ageing is waiting on him to get back to them again. My husband asked them for help when this guy told him he needed help while we were visiting my friend. I think we will just keep our eyes open and let him lead the way.

I think it's time to call an elder abuse hotline when you begin to wonder if you should call an elder abuse hotline.
