If a person doesn't have enough work credits, can they apply for disability using their ex-spouse's work record? Thanks

That would be a question for Social Security.

I believe the rule is if you were married for 10 years or more. But check with SSA.

That is my understanding as well but SSA would have the definitive answer.

Social Security is very helpful at answering these sorts of questions. You may have to sit on hold for a long time, but once you get someone all your questions will be answered.

Check their website. The answer may be there without calling, besides they highly suggest doing all you can online before calling anyway,

Do you have a disability? No, you can't qualify using someone else's work record. You may qualify for SSI if you don't have enough work quarters.

If you were married to your ex-husband for ten years or longer at the time of your divorce, you may qualify for his benefits which no doubt will be more than yours. This applies when you are 65 or older but not under 65.

When it comes to Social Security Disabilty you can't get it after 65. If you have it before 65, it changes to regular SS after 65. The amount does not change. But when on SSD they check in about every 3 yrs and ask if your still disabled.

You really need to talk to SS. When u find out the answer please come back and tell us. We learn from others.
