Since starting Eliquis a year ago, my mother's health has suffered. She's going in for a fourth transfusion this week. These problems seemed to have started when a cardiologist put her on Eliquis. I wonder if her quality of life would be improved if she reduced the amount of her daily Eliquis. She seems to have some GI bleed that has worsened significantly in the past few months. She's 97 and until the past six months, she was reasonably independent.

Yes, she needs to be taken off it. It is causing internal bleeding. By stopping it her blood will clot better and maybe help slow down the bleeding. I am surprised the doctors have not thought of this.

Lisamarie,
There are other alternatives but each can have a higher risk profile depending on what else is going on with your mother. However, it should be simple to contact the physician’s office and discuss the transfusions and next steps so that you can get this addressed.
