My mom is still at home and now in the late-stage of Alzheimer's. She is not swallowing. Noticed this morning in her mouth she is holding old salvia mixed with mucus and food particles. It is hard to open her mouth to clean it. I called the doctor and he said to give liquid mixed with a thickner and he would have hospice get involved.

Just wondering, what have other done or are doing?

If you have a very tiny sponge, even cut a tiny piece about the size of a quater, wet it an wipe her mouth out if you can.... better than making her aspirate whatever she has in her mouth . yes Hospice needs to be involved ASAP.....

Isn't anyone brushing her teeth and gums or cleaning her dentures? This needs to be done daily. Yes, I think you will need some help if she is unable to swallow. She might have to be fed by tube. I am so sorry. I have been where you are.

I am very sorry that you and your mother had to go through such a hard time. I read someone who took care of her mother at home said she gentry opened her mother's mouth and gave her even a one spoon of drink. She repeated many times, and gentry hold her. I remember one of the residents in an assisted living facility. She refused to eat. Her mouth was tightly closed. When I talked to her with a smile, she eventually opened her mouth to eat and drink a little. I wish I can give you better answer...
