I take care of my mom. She lives right smack us. She is completely dependent and wheelchair bound. Her overall health is goods so this is more of a future question to help me have a plan in place. First I should explain that when I was 20 I was home from college and when I got up one morning dad was dead on the bathroom floor when I walked in. He had had a stroke in the middle of the night and we didn't know until morning. So saying that, every morning when I go to get mom up I worry I may find her dead. She has had a brain tumor and whole brain radiation so a stoke is very likely. Anyway, I panic thinking about it although I would rather her die at home than in a nursing home somewhere. Anyway, who do you contact when this happens? Do you call 911? The coroner? I think having a plan in place will help me not worry about the future as much. I really hate this responsibility.

If Hospice is not in place, you call 911. They call the coroner. You answer an awful lot of questions. They may order an autopsy. If they decide the death is not a homicide, they expect you to call a funeral director immediately.
You should pre-plan with the help of a funeral director nearby the home. Our local funeral home did not charge for this.

Hospice isn't involved as she is not terminal. Our funeral director goes to our church so that helps. Ideally, I would prefer hospice will be involved when I go down this road but you never know if a stroke just occurs. She had a TIA in October and scared me then. Called the squad.

Kind of an uncomfortable question to ask but I thank you for doing so. My mom is now in a care facility but when she wasn't I use to wonder about this myself. I don't need the information any longer but I'm sure others out there do. Thanks for getting this info out there. Best wishes.

Thank you rainmom for your understanding. I was scared to ask. It is an awful question. But honestly I worry about it and figured asking was better than adding another worry.

Kannie & Rainmom, A care facility will call you, but you still need to pre-plan a funeral, because the facility wants the deceased removed immediately. Very immediately, because the health department says so.

Kannie, I don't think you should be embarrassed or feel uncomfortable asking this question. When someone dies, it's often so traumatic, emotional and unexpected that it isn't easy to think clearly, sometimes even enough to call 911.

I compliment you on having the courage to ask so that you can be prepared.
