Find Care & Housing
Yes, this has happened with my Mother in Law a few times. She was either having a stroke or a TIA at the time. You should take your mother to her doctor to be examined.

Sudden onset like this could be Urinary Tract infection, or some other infection. Happened to my mom a few times just like you said, with a little looney tunes confusion as well...and pretty blotto. This is commonly reported on this forum. There is a home test you can buy at one of the larger drugstores, or get her doctor to Rx a urine test. First take her temp.

Also is she taking any new meds? Zocor and Ditropan both zonked my mom's consciousness factor.

It has also happened to my Mom who is 89 and is diagnoised with alz/demetia moderate stage presently. In my mom's case it was a need for a pacemaker to zap her heart to get blood to the brain. Few years later she reacted the same way as before only more aggitated and aggressive turn out that was a urinary tract infection. Sometimes when she attempts to get up to quickly from a chair or the toilet she behaves that way,I can tell because her eyes get a glazed look on them. Checked with the doctor and he said that this happens due to the meds she has to take to keep her quailty of life in tact. I would take her to the doctor and have tests ran.

EMS, if still non-responsive, or to the doctor or nearest emergency clinic covered by her health insurance. Hope her blood glucose is not too low. Either way, she needs medical attention as soon as possible, to determine what may be wrong. Sorry her day and week started this way. Wishing the best outcomes for you and your Mom today, samanthab. Please let us know how you are both doing, ok?

I have had this happen to my mom as well. I found it best to purchase a "AZO" urinary test strip from the drugstore. They come in a box of three - about $10.00. Use as directed. If the results are positive, I recommend calling the doctor, telling him of the resuts and requesting that her urine be tested and "cultured". My mother was on a broad spectrum antibiotic, but the bacteria was resistant to that antibiotic and thus ineffective. Once the appropriate antibiotic was determined and she began taking it, she improved immediately..both physically and mentally. Please know that I am thinking of and praying for both of you.

This happens to my mom pretty often. She is really out of it in the morning, very confused, but then clears after a while. She comes out of the bedroom and looks around like "where the HE** am I?"

This happened to my Mother last month.
She was non-responsive for about 10 min. and when she came around she was confused and her speach was slurred, finally about 1/2 hr. later she could talk normal again and she new she had a stroke.
Then she was left with a severe headache that lasted for about a week, so she finally agreed to go for a CT at the hospital and they found that she had an Aneurysm in the middle of her brain and said that it had probably leaked and that brought on the stroke episode.
I hope everything has turned out ok for your Mom.
Stay Strong and Breath deep often...it can be really hard to take at times, but in the end the love is there :)
