They began morphine, anti-anxiety meds and also meds to help him from choking. He sleeps 80-90 percent if day and is on a liquid diet or very soft foods such as applesauce. He is uncommunicative as well. In your opinion, how long does he have left? Hospice has said he most likely has no more than two weeks left, but they have been very unclear other than that.
If you want a "guess" then speak to your hospice as they are the ones directly caring for the patient, know the history, the vital signs. They can tell you the things to watch for (cooling and mottling of lower extremities for instance) that may indicate death is approaching near.
Talk to your Hospice.
I am so very sorry you are facing this loss.
He can go longer than you think. My GPIL went something like 16 days and after around day 6 it gets really really draining. So keep yourself hydrated, and take your vitamins etc. He might go long.
My late husband was under hospice care in our home for the last 22 months of his life, and I was told by his hospice nurse several times during that time that they thought the end may be nearing, but like the Energizer bunny, my husband just kept on going.
And even when my husband finally did start his dying process and the nurse said he would be dead in 3 days, it took him 41 days before he took his last breath.
So just enjoy whatever time you may have left with your dad and leave nothing left unsaid.
God bless you.
