Jeanne - you know if you pressed it, they would have to do it. BUT the sticky would be that it would likely be a new mortgage and think of all the fees & costs in doing that! For you, it's likely not an issue for qualifying but if a couple have an old mortgage that was written based on their income and work status 10, 15 or 20 years ago, they might now not be able to qualify as the banks are skittish on loans to people no matter what the circumstances.

Well, my husband is dead. When I went into the bank to remove him from the mortgage I was told it can't be done. (They would take his name off mailings to me if I liked.) Thinking about this I realize they would want to be able to get paid from his estate, if it ever came to that.

So I doubt Mom will be able to remove Dad from the mortgage. She should contact the bank or the company that holds the mortgage, to be sure.
