Her shower is very old and has a 6 inch step up. I hold her tight but sometimes her feet get stubbed when she steps over into the shower. A few times we both almost fell. I am searching to see if we can get some kind of senior assistant due to safety so we can get a new walk in shower with out a step. So far I have had two shower companies who quoted very expensive prices on walk in showers. I have two more companies coming next week.

Thank you for any advice.

I've exlored a zero-entrance shower to replace my mom's full tub. Very expensive and every contractor I've called is so busy with bigger projects that they never even call back. Then there's the down-time while they are working on your project (no guarantees how long it will take). The 1-day remodelers (using a pre-fab mould) can be thousands more (I know, I've gotten those eye-watering estimates).

Have you looked at a shower bench? It's a seat that straddles the step. Mom sits on the outside and the seat allows her to scoot over to the shower side. It's the cheapest, safest thing I can think of. Maybe install hand rails as well if you don't have those, as well as a hand-held shower head.

Get a good handyman. He will knock out that step and put in a good, slightly slanted step in.

Have you contacted the area agency on Aging to see if there are any resources available to assist? Sometimes there are financial assistance programs to assist with home modifications. Our county agency also curated a list of persons willing to perform various activities to maintain or modify your home. Good luck.

Yes, I would go with the bench, too. That's what we use.
