Find Care & Housing
Thank you for your kind responses. Yes he has had psych issues since being a teen, and now dementia and a slew of health issues just adds to the mix. He is in a secure facility, however medicaid would not cover a private room and paying a portions of the daily care is not even a possibility. Although he has not been "officially" diagnosed he has all the symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder. He clearly has no tolerance of the actions of others who have any kind of ailments mental nor physical. He has never been one to offer encouragement when he lived @ home when I would be sick. Nowadays I simply do not concern myself w that aspect of his care and allow the aides @ the NH to deal w those issues and/or himself to deal (or not) deal w things. I contain my concerns to other issues like making sure he is not being harmed, abused, neglected and am learning to let of the smaller issues go. Like a poster I saw recently. Just let it go.

It sounds as though he has a long history of psychiatric disorders, perhaps his needs would be better met at a geriatric psychiatric facility.

That might be the case. And they would need to help you find a proper placement for him, such as a secure psychiatric facility. I'm so sorry that you are going through this ordeal!. Please keep posting so that folks who have better insight and suggestions can guide you!

He has a host of medical problems, Schizophrenia,Dementia,Diabetes,Drug induced Parkinson's, Pancreatitis, ulcer disease, gastritis,GERD, Hypertension and many other lesser diseases. He has seen a psychiatrist most of his adult life he is 73 now. In the 18 yrs I've been married to him distraction has never worked, when he gets that way he is like a dog with a new bone. He won't let it go.I am concerned that the nursing home will get enough of it and want him to leave.

Have you discussed his behavior with the staff at his facility? Do they have any suggestions or ideas? I agree about talking to his doctor and asking that his overall health be checked out to rule out a UTI or other illness.

Have you have him evaluated by a geriatric psychiatrist? I might explore if medication might be an option.

1. Has he been tested for a UTI?

2.Is this new behavior? Has he been seen by a geriatric psychiatrist? Meds may help his agitation.
