My Mother repeats the same stories over and over. I think I've heard them 5000 times. I tell her,"Yes Mom, you have already told me." to no affect. I even finish the stories for her and she just keeps telling them. She will repeat the same things over and over. The other day we went out to brunch and she must have said, "These potatoes are so good and I usually don't like potatoes at least 10 times in an hour. She doesn't have dementia or any other problem like that but she continues. Another thing she does us constantly interrupt and not let anyone finish their conversation with her. It gets pretty frustrating and she knows she's doing it. I am the only one who visits and calls her on a regular basis as my selfish three brothers moved out of state and can't even be bothered to call her once in awhile.

Be patient & listen.
It's the illness, not the person doing it to be annoying
One day you may wish you'd be able to hear them ask that same question after their gone.
I know from experience, I'd give anything to hear my Mom one more time, no matter how many times I've heard a story before

I can only speak for myself - not for others. Everyone has a different tolerance level before the lose it and explode - even if the patient is ill and can't help it. As to me, I simply cannot tolerate hearing the repeats over and over again. It would drive me to drink and to insanity. I would listen a few times and then I would state I have heard it before and they should stop asking. Of course, it won't sink in but it might relieve you a bit to say it. If changing the subject or doing something else doesn't stop it, I would never blame anyone for totally losing it and exploding - if you hold it in and get so frustrated, your relationship feelings will change and you will be horribly affected by this. If you can't handle it, and some can and others can't, then either get a caretaker to relieve you or place the person. There is no way to stop this and not everyone can handle it - I know I couldn't.

Make sure he doesn't have a hearing problem. Sometimes the questions are repeated since they could not hear the answers.

Otherwise, I try to redirect the conversation to other topics or redirect to another activity.
