My brother-in-law had many of these, and believed his old dead dog was sitting next to him, comforting him.

Because his deceased old dog WAS likely sitting next to him, comforting him! 😊

They actually aren't "vivid dreams"(as dreams happen when we're asleep)but instead are very real and happen when the dying person is awake.
My late husband was talking to people for about 2 weeks before he went unconscious that I couldn't see, but when I asked him if he knew who they were he said yes. And when I asked him if they wanted him to go with them he again said yes. And when I asked him if he wanted to go with them he turned his head to me and said very adamantly NO!
I have heard so many stories from people I know that told of their loved ones seeing family members that had gone on before them, angels and yes even Jesus in the room with them while in their dying process.
What a great comfort to know that their are others that will be waiting for us when our time comes to leave this world for the next.

OP, having read your profile and your feelings about your husband, this might be wishful thinking on your part!

Yes, it happens. They are transitioning from the earth realm to the spiritual realm. I know when it is my time which I'm not expecting anytime soon, there are a whole host of people I want to see. And a couple of close people to help me cross over.

Yes, as an RN I saw NO returns from the dead and the bright lights and tunnels things with patients I had resuscitated, but I OFTEN witnessed those who were close to death getting visitations. They were not dreams as my patients were usually restfully awake when these occurred. They may have been hallucinations, but usually not dreams. They were ALWAYS greatly comforted by these visions of family. I am not a "believer " myself, but I did witness this in patients.

My husband has those vivid dreams or he swears he is awake and sees people.
Funny but annoying are his long talks or arguments while asleep sometimes in language I don’t recognize and he is generally gentle and not argumentative.
And he is not dying!
