We moved them into an independent living apt. where she does not need to cook and they wash their sheets, but that's it. My step-father acts like he's helpless because my mom has always taken care of him, but he does fine when she was in the hospital for 5 weeks & in rehab place for 2 or 3 weeks. He keeps the heat on 77 and will not take a blanket so my mom doesn't have to sweat all day. They have Medicare and health ins. from his Post Office job decades ago. Can we get someone to take care of him and take the load off of mom??

PS: If your mother and step-father are already on Medicaid, and IF they live in a community with either Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) or Money Follows the Person (MFP) Medicaid programs, they may get some extra help paid for this way.

If they have a supplemental insurance that will pay for some in-home health care, that's great. Otherwise, they may have to pay the full price themselves. However, it's obvious that your mom can't continue as a caregiver, so something needs to be done before a heart attack kills her. If the cost of the care eventually puts them on Medicaid, then that's what needs to happen. I'm hoping that their insurance helps pay, though many don't, and basic Medicare certainly won't at this point in time. Good luck,

Call Medicare and their supplemental insurance company and see if they'll pay for in-home help. I work in home health care and many of my patients have Medicare and then a supplemental that pays for their home health. Sometimes there's a cap to it, say like 6 hours a day of care, but even 6 hours would be a huge help. Good luck!
