My mother-in-law (89) has dementia.  She is also becoming more depressed and deliberately eating less than normal. Other than taking her back to the dentist (planning to do) what else can we do to help her stop picking her teeth and to eat more? The dentist suggested using a water pic. We are and she likes it but is picking her teeth even more no matter what we do.

There's really very little you can do to get your MIL to eat more. Be encouraging but don't shame her for not eating enough.

Maybe she's picking her teeth because her teeth feel different since she went to the dentist. Or maybe it's become a nervous habit. Have you asked her why she's picking her teeth?

Unsure of the level if her dementia, but perhaps she's focusing nore in her teeth because you are focusing more in her teeth.

I wasn't finished, sorry. Besides I was trying to correct my typo. Meant to say focused more 'on' her teeth. Also you can address the depression and that might help. Some medications affect appetite.
