He has had a difficult year with sepsis, a septic knee, surgery, then falling a breaking his hip which of course required another surgery. Instead of getting stronger, he seems to be getting weaker and falling for no apparent reason. He walks with a walker, and when you ask him how it happened, he doesn't know. Two days ago he fell off the edge of the bed again after reaching for a cup of coffee on the dresser. Could it be Parkinson's Disease?

Do think he may have had a stroke? Is one side weaker than the other? I would be calling his MD in the AM

Weak joints, weak bones, impaired vision? Whatever it is, he shouldn't be alone. He may have already re-injured something during his last fall.....When sitting, does he shake? Are his hands shaky?

WornOutDaughter, oh my gosh you have your hands full especially since your mother has Alzheimer's/Dementia. Like Pam said above, have your Dad's doctor check him over.

How long ago was the hip surgery? It it was just a couple of months ago, your Dad could still have lingering effects of being under for the surgery. I know for myself, for every hour I am under, it takes one month for each hour before I feel normal again. And there are side effects from medicines, and falling could be one of them.

Thank you everyone. No I'm sure he didn't have a stroke. He also doesn't shake like your typical person would with Parkinson's. He is still cognitively there with the occasional forgetfulness. It's just that he doesn't know what to do i think when he feels himself falling. And he can't figure out how to get himself up once he's down. His partial hip replacement was in August and it has healed wonderfully. The ortho says his bones are amazing for someone his age. He just started back to PT Friday 2 x week so hopefully that will help.

Can his PCP review all his meds? My MIL took a bad fall one day, didn't know how it happened - turned out she was on too much blood pressure meds and her pressure was up and down.

Also have his doctor check his blood pressure when he goes from a sitting to a standing position. Some folks' blood pressure drops dramatically and they fall down. It's called orthostatic hypotension (or low blood pressure when someone stands up).

The falling over could be from blood pressure meds (happened to me, I got up one morning, walked about 2 steps and just went down. Got off the meds, never happened again. Did try them again several weeks later, noticed feeling dizzy and got off of them.)
The stiff does sound like Parkinsons--FIL did that with Parkinsons, but he did have the typical tremor. I don't recall obvious tremor with my brother, but he did have the stiffness and dementia.
Worth asking about.

Thanks. I will check his bp to make sure it's not orthostatic. He doesn't complain of dizziness prior to falling. Partsmom, did you feel dizzy?

Not constantly, but occasionally if I lifted my head quickly.
Also, I have had sinus issues that also had similar symptoms.
