If I move my mom in w/me to help take care of her will her SSI benefits get taken or even lowered. She receives 733/mthly & 135 in fd stampsRight now she lives on her own with the help of section 8 housing. She is having lots of medical issues and I want to help her out but she lives 20 minutes from me now and it makes it hard to get to her as often. I am buying a house at the end of March and have room for her but do not want to leave her with no income due to it being a burden on me if I have to cover every cost for her.

Thank you guys for taking the time out to help with my question. As for the HCBS program I will look into that never heard of it before. As for the whole mobility and left alone part I must say didn't even think that far out. I have a lot of thinking and researching to do before taking this big step. Just don't want to regret anything later. Maybe and option would be to move her closer so I can get to her faster and make sure to stop through every other day routinely. (sigh)

First ask yourself if you can take care of her as her condition worsens, which it will. How much care does she need today? What are the prospects for get mobility? Can she be left alone for periods of time, while you go to the grocery store? This decision is far more complicated than $135 per month.
Are you willing to become a daily caregiver?
Is your home would only be a temporary solution, opt for the more permanent, change is difficult the older we get

As you know, food stamps are based on household income. If your state supports Assisted Living on a Medicaid HCBS program, that would be a better option. They can manage meds, transport to appointments, and she will have lots of companions her own age.
