I have lived and cared for my parents for years...they own the house. How can I place my mother in a facility that cares for dementia patients if she lives into the late stages of that disease? My dad still lives here...he's 90. Will a facility take the house?

Hi pamsteman, I once heard at a seminar...that if other family members lived in the house for a long time...the house would not be taken...have you heard of anything like that?

If you can keep them out of a NH for five years, put the house in your & brothers names, and make them Life Tenants. Medicaid looks back 5 yrs.
If you are much closer to needing a NH, Medicaid will lien on the house. They will not take anything as long as the other spouse is still alive.

My parents are both on social security...and I think just slightly above medicaid...but will check on that again. Right now they are not on it, so I'm thinking they didn't qualify. I thought I could take care of my parents in the home until they died...that way I, along with two brothers would inherit the home, sell when they died. So, it sounds like if they don't qualify for medicaid, I lose the house??.

Dad's 90, do you want him living alone or would you want him move into something like assisted living?

You need to see if your mother qualifies for medicaid. That way, you will not have to sell the house. How are you providing for yourself financially? Where are you going to live in the future?
