Barney was obnoxious. Have a friend who got a serpentine snake tattoo around his upper arm... I told him if he had it done in purple, we could call it: Barney :)

He wasnt so happy with me.. everyone laughed.. Poor guy.

How about bad songs from the 80s through 90s. That's my era.

I really dislike the song Love Shack. It sounds like an ugly mismatched patchwork put together by a rowdy group of no-talent people who decided to take turn making up lines.

Drunk 1: Love shack, baby love shack
Drunk 2: I'm headin' down the Atlanta highway, lookin' for the love getaway
Drunk 3: (gulp! belch!) to the love shack...

You can mix and match the lines of the song and it will still sound the same.

Polar,

My vote for the 80’s is Don’t Worry, Be Happy.

I can tell you you I couldn’t listen to sing in my house on television in the 90’s, Barney and Friends. Oh my gosh, No Way! Sesame Street was great but I couldn’t stomach my children watching Barney. His voice drove me insane!

So many to choose from! But let’s face it - these songs were the soundtrack of our youth.

Leaving the cake out in the rain...
Muskrat Love...
You light up my life...
All good nominees.

How about Minnie Riverton’s “Loving You”? That high note is enough to split an eardrum. But then, that would be merciful in this songs case.

The Candyman is NOT all about drugs! It's about candy. It was written as part of the screenplay for Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Similar cruel slanders have been levelled at "Puff the Magic Dragon," the Magic Roundabout, and certainly Captain Pugwash. The rumours of hidden messages were started by stoned students with nothing better to do than ruin children's entertainment.

Dang--my first thought was "Muskrat Love"---I have Alexa play it for my gkids and they look at me like "you LIKED this song"...no, I thought it was hilarious.

WHAT is the title of the 'worst song ever' that has the lyrics "I been to the desert on a horse with no name, it felt good to be out of the rain, In the desert you can't remember your name.." Ok, I will quit torturing you.

Also- MacArthur Park--'someone left the cake out in the rain'

A dumb, but still a huge favorite-- Oliver's recording of "Good Morning Starshine".
Silly but sweet.

If Alexa is just playing 70's pop, and "You light up my life' comes on I yell at her to SKIP THAT SONG.

My DH is a HUGE Bob Dylan fan--so we saw him in concert 2 years ago. I still have a headache. You could not decipher what he was singing---and the lady next to me said "He's wearing sweatpants from Costco" and by darn, he was! The "Kirkland" label was on the waistband.

I remember one concert when Billy Joel was the warmup for Seals and Croft.

I can't HELP that the 70's were my teen years and so many songs spoke to that angsty teen emotions. Some songs remind me of long past loves and if I hear them now---I'm back in '75, madly in love with the boy du jour. "I can't Stop That Feeling"

ANYTHING that started out with the 'ooga chakka, ooga chakka' beat was awesome :)

Mid,

I am one of those people too. I can tell you who I was with and what I was doing when a song plays.

Memories...

I saw Billy Joel in high school with my boyfriend. He promised to take me. Well, I was really looking forward to going and I asked him what time should I be ready for him to pick me up. He tells me that he forgot to buy the tickets! I was upset.

I took off on my bicycle to console myself with a new album from my neighborhood record shop.

As I was browsing, a friend of the cashier came in with two Joel tickets that he won on the radio. He wanted to sell them to the employee. The cashier could not go. I went up to him and asked him to sell them to me. He told me the price.

I didn’t have that much money. He said, “How much do you have?” I told him the amount of money that I had on me and he said no he would not sell at that price because it wasn’t the ticket value.

I reminded him that he got them for free because he won them. The cashier told him to reconsider and sell them to me. He finally did sell them to me.

I called my boyfriend and we went to the concert. When we got to the third row he said, “Wow, great seats!” The usher didn’t stop until the first row! My boyfriend was glad that he forgot to buy the tickets because I scored first row seats and Leo Kottke warmed up for Billy Joel.

This was at Theatre for the Performing Arts which has been renamed to Mahalia Jackson Theatre.

I remember Seals and Croft, specifically, Unborn Child. My friend became pregnant and her dad flew her to NY for an illegal abortion.

Abortion became legal the next year. She did not want to have an abortion but they threatened to disown her if she wouldn’t.

Times were different then, she would have been expelled from school and she was a straight A student.

Her mom and dad were furious about her pregnancy. They wouldn’t let her have her child to place for adoption. They told her to get an abortion or live on the street. She was scared and agreed to the abortion.

Anyway, Unborn Child always made me cry thinking of what my friend went through.

Interesting...I can't remember any songs from the 1970s!    I remember folks songs from the 1960's, but the 1970's were changing times and I probably just didn't listen to radio except for the Sat. afternoon Metropolitan Opera broadcast.  I do think that popular songs deteriorated over the years, and that's probably another reason I don't remember them.

The songs other posters have named aren't even remotely familiar to me.   Guess that really dates me!

Yay! For the 60’s. Early seventies were good but later 70’s had horrible music.

You mentioned folk music. Ahhh, the 60’s and early 70’s Were you a Joni Mitchell fan? Joan Biaz? Dylan? Peter, Paul & Mary? Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young? Simon and Garfunkel? So many others...

It made me pretty sad when our Golden Oldies radio channel switched from 50s-60s music to 70s-80s (my era)...yech. Muskrat Love is a totally cringe-worthy song. One great thing about the interweb is that it provides a platform for how much talent there is in the world. We're no longer forced to consume the payola playlists. But my votes are for: Send in the Clowns. If you weren't suicidal before hearing it, you were after. And, Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree. I don't care about its message. Cringe, cringe. Shudder.

For me, the song Car Wash was one the the worst. The first time I heard it on the radio, I thought some idiot called into the station to get on the radio and did a 'sing in the shower' version of the song. The singer was awful as was the song. Both song writer and singer should tear up their musician cards. Ugh....

River,

Saw your earlier post on Rod Stewart. I have to tell you my Rod Stewart story 😊.

He was playing at the municipal auditorium in New Orleans. That venue is no longer open but it was a hot spot for concerts when I was a teenager. I saw tons of concerts there.

My best friend was in this on again, off again relationship with her boyfriend. He bought tickets for them to see Rod Stewart. She was in one of her off again modes so he asked me to go. Of course, I told him that I couldn’t go because he was dating my best friend.

So, he tells me to call her to see if she if she would mind. I thought, why not? I called, she was still mad at him and was not going to go with him but said that she did not mind me going with him. So, off we went to the concert.

The concert was awesome! Rod did a couple of encores and my friend said to me that he wanted to leave so we could beat the traffic. I said that I wanted to stay because he may do another song. Then, we saw them carrying the equipment off the stage so we took off as everyone stood and cheered for him to play another song.

As we approached the parking lot, a huge white limo nearly hit me as we were running to my friend’s car.

When I looked into the car I could see Rod Stewart in the back seat. I told my friend all excitedly like a silly teenage girl, “Wow, we were almost hit by Rod Stewart while running to your car to beat the crowd out of here!”

Love Rod! He was big in the seventies.

I have seen tons of national acts but I am blessed living in New Orleans. Our city is loaded with fantastic musicians. Our local guys rival any national acts. They play their regular gigs here but tour all over as well. We are known for our music and great food! Some people come to play music here due to our music scene and never leave.

One of my favorite pianists in our city is from England. He’s been here a long time so we claim him as a native. Anyway, Jon Cleary is awesome! He definitely picked up our New Orleans vibe. He blends in beautifully. His Grammy is very well deserved!

My expecting daughter was supposed to go for a few days from TX(visiting her sister). I am sure they are bummed. She had a great time last year at a bachelorette and wanted to take her husband before life gets more real with second baby due in August. My Texas son in law loves it there. He took my daughter there in their early stages of dating. He takes their daughters for a holiday weekend in early December as older daughter has December 5th birthday. I hear wonderful things. The photos of beignets look scrumptious. Just an incredibly difficult time with so many missed experiences and the unfathomable loss of businesses. Please God help us all.

We would be finished in an hour and I would have brought treats home from a bakery.

I've just been looking up top singles sales worldwide. There are only three from the seventies in the top fifteen.

One is less surprising than the others - You're The One That I Want, from Grease.
The top seller is 'In The Summertime' by Mungo Jerry - 30 million copies, and it only just squeaks in to our category because it was from 1970.

You will NEVER guess the third one, released in 1977 and selling *18 million* copies. Any offers?

Okay,

Did anyone go to their high school prom in the seventies? I did.

Guess who played at our school dances before he became famous? Dr. John. He was Mac Rebennack then. He wasn’t playing the piano then. He started off on guitar, switched to piano later.

We could drink at 18 then. So, we would go hear music all over the city because we were of legal age to get in the clubs and bars.

RIP Dr John

His dad is buried in the same cemetery as my dad.

Dr. John is in another cemetery.
