Find Care & Housing
IT HAS BEEN 2 YEARS SINCE I POSTED THE QUESTION AND I HAVE JUST NOW FOUND A PROGRAM THAT WILL PAY FOR SOME RESPITE HOURS EACH WEEK. I ASKED WHY I NEVER HEARD OF THEM BEFOR AND WAS TOLD THEY DID NOT ADVERTISE THEIR SERVICES. I WOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN SOME HELP WAS AVAILABLE IF A NURSE HAD NOT TOLD ME ABOUT IT. THE PROGRAM IS THROUGH A COMMUNITY SERVICE GRANT IN MY COUNTY. I RECOMMEND THAT IF SOMEONE NEEDS RESPITE , START IN THE PHONE BOOK AND CALL ALL THE COMMUNITY PROGRAMS IN THEIR AREA UNTIL THEY FIND HELP BECAUSE IF IT IS AVAILABLE IN MY COMMUNITY IT IS AVAILABLE IN ALL COMMUNITIES.

Janice, what state are you located in? Best start is usually your local senior center. They always have someone who knows all the ins and outs in your area. They may even know volunteers who will came in and sit with Mom while you get out for a while.
My Mom goes to the local adult daycare 3 days a week from 9 to 3. Most of it is paid for by and elder service in our area. Mom has a small co-pay. Your doctor's office may be able to give you some information too. They can do a referral for home visits through the local VNA. There are some options, depending on where you live. So definitely check with her doctor and local senior center.
Is Mom on medicare? Her doctor could refer her to a nursing home also, for a week for respite. She would only have to pay her copay.
Hope this is some help to you. Been taking care of Mom for almost 3 years now, full time and 2 years before while I was still working. It can really take it's toll on your mind and your body! Good luck!!
