My mother has been diagnosed with a mental illness for years, but she is at the point where she can no longer take care of herself. For example, she cannot do basic activities like cook for herself or bathe herself. My father passed away a couple of years ago and it is becoming too much on my siblings and I to take care of her. We are considering a nursing home so that my mom can be somewhere that can care for her. We live in New Jersey but have found it challenging to find any resources online about assistance for nursing homes, especially for the mentally ill. Does anyone know of any resources/programs/etc. to help those with a mental illness find a nursing home and/or any kind of assisted living. Thank you so much.

Lailaro222, I dont think its difficult to find a place, just call them and put her on a waiting list, they are usually asking to fill applications, long enough and have doctors/nurse notes. And of course the source of payment(private or medicaid). What is difficult is to be sure that this particular nursing home is good one, I visited two and by just visiting could not see the difference and the good or bad sides....Hard...

@JoAnn29: thanks so much for the input. In your experience, do you think it is difficult to find space in a nursing home? Are many maxed out?

@poetry21: Thanks for your reply. We are not at the stage were my mother would be considered dangerous, and I don't think we will ever reach that point. The main concern is that she just can't do basic functions anymore because she doesn't think to do them. We are located in the north jersey area.

I live in SNJ near DE bridge. We have few nursing homes maybe 4 within a half hour. I don't think an AL will take her. We have an AL with a Dementia section that is a lockdown. They are not cheap. In my area 5k a month depending on care needed. 7k for the Dementia section. Nhs in my area are 10k a month. NHs will except Medicaid but ALs have you pay privately for at least 2 yrs before they take Medicaid. There is a Psychiatric hospital in Princeton, I think. My GFs father was taken there to adjust his meds for violent behaviour caused by his ALZ. Is your Mom under care of a Psychiatrist or neurologist. If so, ask them.

Go to the National Institute of Mental Health website and contact them to see if they have a list of facilities that would accept your mom. They may have a state by state list.

I am also in NJ, central, and I am also thinking now about NH placement. My mom has many issues and dementia in in their list. But as I understand until its completely AZ or behaviorally dangerous, they did not put in a mental, just regular NH. mental means that they will be completely locked out. Is it the stage that you need to? What part of NJ you are?
