About 4 months ago we had to move my grandma, who has Alzheimer’s, out of her home and across the country to live with my family at least for a little while. It’s been a rocky move, as she’s lived in a small town in her house for probably 35 years, and now she’s in a city and house she’s never even visited. She’s had anxiety and probably some undiagnosed delusional disorders most of her life so we were initially unsure if her behaviors were from that or her Alzheimer’s, but we’ve accepted her behavior disturbances are a lovely combination of both. Anyway before coming here, she had a nice routine at her own house, could get around, dress, and use the toilet on her own. Now, she needs help with all of these things. I wished we never had to move her, but we now may be able to move her back to her home. My question is, would some of this decline we’ve seen perhaps reverse a little bit once she’s back in her familiar house? Or has it been too long since she left and the damage is done?
It is hard on old people to change residence regardless of the dementia. No one can tell you if she will be better to go home. It’s a nice thought and perhaps she will be. Has her home remained the same? Have her belongings remained in place? If so, that might help.
Do come back and let us know how it goes.
