Hi all thanks for the support you’ve given thus far as I navigate this situation. I’m an only child. Dad and mom divorced. Dad is in Philly area, I’m in upstate NY. He refused to come to me and after moving him to 4 places (independent, assisted, rehab, etc.) I think we’ll get him settled in final AL. She’s going to be alone for Christmas. I’m getting him a. big smart TV and I gave him my old iPad. But he’s 87 and not too tech savvy. The king how we can we “connect more” face to face. He doesn’t have an iPhone (refused that gift). I’m thinking zoom, but even that requires some navigation. I remember during Covid friends and I would chat, have virtual happy hour, and watch movies together. What are some easy ways I can do this with him that I can set up in advance so all he has to do is push a button? Is this something AL facility would help with? Would a smart TV have an easy feature? Looking for ideas. Thank you.

Why buy him a big Smart TV. He will not have that much room. And at 87, is he going to know how to use it? My Mom couldn't use her analog. I got her a small snart TV. I used an antenna which only gave her a few channels. One was all the old TV shows so I just left it on that channel. She was mostly in the common area. Only had the TV on in the evening. Also, the smaller the TV screen the sharper the image.

I recently found out that with "Alexa" you can "drop in" on someone and talk to them.
The only draw back I see with that is that he would not be able to see you. I know with my Husband the worse his dementia became the less he wanted to use the phone. I kinda figured it was because he could not see the person to be sure who he was talking to.

I suppose some cameras could be set up and with the camera you can also talk to the person. this would also allow you to monitor him. (If the facility allows this)

There have been several discussions on the forum about using the Echo Dot or similar devices to connect remotely, unfortunately I have no first hand experience with that tech. Try doing a forum search for those posts (it's the magnifying glass up by your avatar)
