Could you possibly interest her in a Ring type doorbell and have a camera that way that tracks the doors - but that way she gets the benefit of being able to see who is at her door? Maybe that way SHE sees it as a benefit to her and you get the benefit of seeing her when she comes and goes? At the very least you could have the app on your phone too and be able to see that she's safe each day at certain points? We haven't run into this yet to the point where it is an issue. My grandmother WANTS to talk on the phone to anyone who will call and FIL will wear the LifeAlert (and apparently liked to test it until the Sheriff's deputy showed up and scared my SIL half to death).

It's good your grandma wants to talk on the phone!

Hahaha.... there is no chance my mom would wear a life alert, unfortunately.

I've seen a ring doorbell mentioned a few times. That's a good idea but I'm worried if she fell in the house the ring wouldn't catch that. It'd be very hard to convince her to put cameras inside the house.

I actually started a company with my dad called CarePenguin for this exact reason! We make a sensor that detects if a loved one has used water or not that day to show they're going about their normal routine. We'd love for you to give it a try! :)

Hey! Thanks for getting back to me. She is 83.

It's not so much what we say on the call, she just doesn't like that the purpose of the call is to check on her. We keep it light and friendly but she gets annoyed. She has neighbors but I would feel like it would be a burden on them.

How do other people do this?

Has she always lived in the mountains on her own? Seems like "mountain people" are pretty self sufficient. But 83 is "getting up there". I wish you good luck. I didn't really start "worrying" about my own mom until she was about 88 or so and years later, finally brought her here over 3 hours from her home to visit for July 4th about 5 years ago and she just stayed :) She is now 97 and it hasn't been always easy, butted heads a LOT the first year and a half, but very glad I did. There were many times with the phone calls when she wouldn't get the phone back on the hook properly so it would ring busy for hours. Had to get a wellness check from the police / neighbors a couple of times. And then there was the time she'd open the door to the guy who worked some on her yard who we didn't know from Adam and invite him into the house. And she'd answer the door to strangers. And then talk to anybody on the phone and give out all sorts of information. And these are the things that happened while I was visiting her. No telling what happened when I wasn't there.

How old is your mom?

Does she object to a quick call every day just for you to say "I love you"? I mean, as long as she picks up the phone, she's okay. You don't have to grill her.

Does she have a neighbor you could call if you cannot reach her?
