This article discusses this, and the discounts available: https://realestate.usnews.com/home-services/medical-alert-system/free-medical-alert-system
I am a Fall Risk, and researched these devices a few years ago. You tend to get what you "pay" for. My Senior Center offered them at a discount from a "no name" vendor, some Medicare Advantage Plans offer them. None of them in my research were from highly rated companies.
Wound up buying a Lively Mobile 2 Fall Protection Pendant, it's $28 a month for me to push a button myself if I fall or need help. It's $10 more a month if you add automatic fall detection. I've used it a few times already. It's $79 to buy, goes on sale for 1/2 off on various Holidays.
Also, Amazon sells some "911 only" pendants/watches with no monthly fee. SkyAngel 911FD is $179 to buy, no monthly fees afterwards.
I am sorry to hear that you have had to use your pendant a few times but thankful that you had found one for yourself should the time come when u did need it..So scary to think of not having the option.
Thank you so much for your reply and very helpful info. I will pass this along to the person asking for her neighbor. These will be very helpful.
The government doesn't owe people life alert buttons. This is something we have to research and figure out for ourselves. Then we pay for it ourselves as well.
It's just like cell phones, fancy sneakers, food, and a car. You study the options, choose it, buy it. If you can't afford it, you don't buy it. Or maybe you pay for it on a time payment plan. The first thought is not, "WHAT CAN I GET FOR FREE FROM THE GOVERNMENT."
What can we get for free from the government seems to be the first question when anyone needs something. Lawn care, car repairs, life alert, ramps, etc. We should have an entire thread on this site on things people expect for free. I guess I'm just a grumpy old woman who has saved and planned for my future.
Thank you for your reply and helpful info. I do not know much about the situation other than it is for a wheelchair bound elderly woman that was widowed this year and just a few days ago, her only son passed away. He had just moved in with her to care for her. A concerned neighbor of hers asked me if I knew of any orgs that could help with a device. I guess she and her husband had used their savings for his care after she could no longer walk. She did have meals on wheels and a cg a few times a week but the funding has been cut. Not sure she has anyone so prob one that calls 911.

Welcome to real life.
Is it for you or someone else? Many elders don't like using them or forget to put them or don't remember what they're for.
