My Father had 2 strokes less than 2 weeks apart. He has been released from Duke Hospital Neuro ICU and is now a patient at a rehab facility. Physical Therapy has been awesome, but he still can't walk. He lives by himself. I am his son and I live an hour and a half away, and I'm not eligible for retirement. He still can't walk. His 100 Medicare days expire this week, and he is not well enough to go home, and we're not able to afford the private pay fees at Hillcrest. Is there any help for us ? Please...

Do you think he needs a nursing home? In NC, you have to be able to transfer with the assistance of one person in order to live in Assisted Living. IF he can transfer okay, he can apply for Special Assistance, which is NC's payment for Assisted Living for certain individuals who need it according to a doctor and if they meet the financial requirements. Social services can assist you with the application, but I would read a lot before I applied.
Do you think he would qualify for Medicaid? They will pay for the nursing home, if he needs skilled nursing care. He could apply and if he qualifies they will pay for his nursing home care. There are lots of rules about this though. If he does, I'd read a lot more around here and even check with an attorney about it.
I hope that helps. I hope you'll get more responses that might help you.
Are you his Durable Power of Attorney and Healthcare POA? If not, I'd get that immediately.
