I haven't seen anything about ingesting coconut oil to battle Alzheimer's & dementia on any mainstream TV shows yet. However my dad called me earlier today and told me to turn on TBN because they were going to have an episode about coconut oil. What they showed was pretty amazing, or at least hopeful. Apparently not everyone can break down glucose in their bodies, which the brain needs for health. Without the glucose, the brain dies. Coconut oil is supposed to have 'keytones' (don't know about the spelling) which take the place of glucose and can travel to the brain to feed it. They have shown marked improvement in not only Alz/dementia patients, but also those who have MS, ALS and Parkinson's. Basically anyone that needs brain help it sounds like to me. You can use it in place of butter and cooking oil they said. It looks nasty in the jar to me, but it melts down pretty good so it can be swallowed by teaspoon, which is what the news lady said she does. Only 0.3% of money raised for Alzheimer's goes into research, so whether they actually will follow thru with this coconut oil idea I don't know. 5 million people have Alzheimer's in the U.S. alone, and the reporter said that Medicare won't survive unless they find a cure. Scary.

BlueRick, I just heard yesterday from a dear friend of over 40 years, that she has been giving her mother-in-law with Alzheimer's 2 tbls daily of coconut oil. The mother-in-law has improved she says. I am going to feel my moms caregivers to give mom the same.

I saw the same TBN excerpt and tried to get both of my parents to use it, but, due to unforeseen circumstances both died of complications from other diseases within 1 year or so of trying the product on a haphazard manner. I do not know, therefore, if regular use would allow the ketones in coconut oil to effect a positive change in ALZ/dementia patients or not. My understanding it has to be used regularly and consistently to have any impact.

It did help my husband who no longer was speaking to speak again and even ask questions. He is in the late stage of his Alzheimer's. I am aware of one lab that is fantically studying tolerance levels before going on the market with capsules. I expect that by the end of this year or first of next, we will have it in pill form on the market. For now I purchase the jars of organic, extra virgin coconut oil to feel to my husband and I. I cook with it and butter my toast, put it in soups, anything I can. The recommended dose that I have seen is 2 Tbs/meal for 3 meals a day. Start slowly as it can give a person loose bowels and you may even see vomiting (this happened to my husband). I cut it back completely for him and restarted at 1 Tbs/day and augmented after one week and so on, so forth. Always check with your doctor first if you have any health problems. Otherwise do try it as it is most tasteful and good for all of us.

My husband was on coconut oil for over a year. I did all the research etc. that I could and thought it was helping but after a year and a half the disease was still progressing so we stopped.

Much easier to just use it in cooking than capsules. Coconut oil is delicious! Stir into oatmeal. Coconut oil has a much higher smoke point than any other cooking oil so even that makes it a much better oil to use for cooking than olive oil.

ur skin is made up of connective tissues. These tissues give our skin strength and elasticity. When we are young and healthy the skin is smooth, elastic and supple. This is the effect of strong connective fibers. As we age their fibers are continually subjected to free-radical attack which breaks them down. As a result, connective tissues become hardened and lose both elasticity and strength. The skin loses its ability to hold itself together and begins to sag and become wrinkled. Once young, soft and smooth the skin turns dry and leathery.

Once a free-radical reaction is started it can cause a chain reaction which produces more free radicals, which ultimately damages thousands of molecules. The only way our body has to fight them is with antioxidants. When a free radical comes into contact with an antioxidant, the chain reaction is stopped. For this reason, it is good to have plenty of antioxidants in our cells and tissues to protect us. The number of antioxidants we have in our tissues is determined to a large extent by the nutrients in our diet. Having anti-oxidants in skin care products is important. Coconut is having all these qualities.

I read an article in Well Being Journal about a yr ago that discussed the benefits of coconut oil in Alz/dementia patients. A physician started putting 2 tbs. in her husband's oatmeal each day and saw marked improvement in his communication and interest levels. The organic extra virgin form is best. I use Barleans for my mother. I have seen improvement, however I have not been consistent in giving it to her because she doesn't like it. I did start to put 1 tbs. in a small amt. of applesauce and she took it that way. I just use 1 tbs. daily because she had loose stools with 2 tbs. daily. She is 90 yr. old and frail, so I usually start slow and gradually increase doses for her.

There is a book about using the Coconut oil called "Alzheimer's Disease..What if there was a Cure?" by Mary Newport, M.D. who started giving to her husband who has Alzheimers. She found it really helped his symptoms.

I have used coconut oil for many things over the years and as far as I am concerned, it's the best sours of Omegas around and is the best skin moisturizer too! Evidence shows there are many good healthful benefits to coconut oil.

On another note though, I recently ran across a product called Anatabloc that has very promising evidence and great reviews for a plethora of conditions that are instigated by excess inflammation in the body, ALS being one of them.

Google it. Research shows its ability to less pain in the body from arthritis to joint and muscle pain. I started using it myself and notice many changes in myself...but I am not here to talk about me. Research it. And draw your own conclusions and try it yourself. If you feel it working in you, then pass it on to your parent or loved one you care for. God knows us caregivers need all the help we can get too though!

You will find Anatabloc at GNC. It is pricey--99.00 for a month supply. That is a mere pittance compared to the cost of pain medication, thyroid and arthritis meds and ALZ meds. This stuff has a patent pending right now, and the only thing that will stop it is the fact the stuff works so well and would eliminate the revenue from pharmaceuticals currently offered for many conditions.

I have been wanting to write about it for the last week or so but am afraid I'd look like a blubbering idiot trying to promote it. Trust me, I am not--at least not to get anything out of it. I have no stock or stake in the company, just a bottle of the stuff sitting here with me. Hubby and I have been sharing this one, so soon it will be time for a new bottle.

No bad side effects either. Find information on Facebook as well. If you do decide to give it a shot, tell us. And also stay on it...even if you think it's not working...give it 5 or 6 weeks. I noticed a difference the first day. Less pain and clearer thinking right away.

I ordered some for Mom too. We'll see how that goes! I had to order the unflavored kind for her

I am 77 years young and have used Nutiva coconut oil for the last 5 years. I use it daily in cooking, baking pies, etc and melt a little each day on an aching hip joint and for facials. I also drink coconut milk(chocolate) and use coconut milk(vanilla) for cooking. And yes, I also take tumeric capsules daily plus other vitamins and homeopathics whenever there is a symtom of any ill health coming on. I work an acre of garden in the spring, summer and fall and have a strong belief in physical activity and being outdoors in the sun. I have a Chi machine to use in the winter months for a bit of exercise and a Sun Splash with all the colors of the sun rays to wipe the winter blues away. Plus daily positive affirmations/prayer. All of the above averts alzheimers or helps with those who have the symtoms. I stay on the internet and answer as many questions on Aging Care.com as possible as this activates the brain cells.

My huaband and I use it daily. We buy it @ Rite-Aid in the supplement section. We get the jar and put a teaspoon of it in our coffee in the am. My husband says he heard it works? He has dementia on his side of the fam so will try this,...will hope for the best results....! It can't do anything to harm you so why not?! With so many DRUGS out there now this seems to be the most logical way to go without any side effects....! ;D

Wow...I'm going to try it on MIL.....does it taste like coconut?You know...coconut milk doesnt taste like "coconut". I ask because she is very verbal about her dislike for coconut...yeah.... another challenge hope it works... I miss MIL's fluent conversations. thank you!

Dr. Oz just did a segment in the last week or two where he talked about something he swears is even better than coconut oil. He says that Red Palm Oil does the same things that coconut oil does, but has even more benefits. I haven't tried it yet myself, but it may be worth looking into. You can read more about it at his website. Just go there and search for "red palm oil" to access the information. I'm particularly interested because of claims that it not only improves blood flow but also actually removes plaque from the veins. If it also helps with mental issues, it certainly seems like it is worth a try.

Look up Dr. Fotuhi and Hippocampus in a search. Great information. Also, Dr. Oz had Dr. Fotuhi as a guest discussing this and other ways of improving brain health. We cook with it, stirring it into soup, topping cooked vegetables and in place of other fat for sauted vegetables. It works great on dry skin and smells great.

There has been news in recent years about the health benefit of coconut oil. I have known that it does not hurt to consume it in some moderate quantities but didn't hear about the health benefits until recently. Back in about 2005 when the gasoline price went up, the coconut oil was used, maybe for a limited time, as a bio-diesel or a mix into the diesel because of its abundance in Thailand. This goes for the palm oil also. Because of these health news, a man from Thailand told me sometime last year that he and his family has been consuming baby coconut "milk" every day. In California, one can buy these young coconuts in boxes at large Chinese supermarkets. Coconut oil is extracted from the meat of a matured [riped] coconut. Young coconut milk does not have much oil but is more palatable to drink. I guess one can drink a little of coconut oil just as one can drink also a little of olive oil. Coonut oil and coconut milk has been used in cooking of Southeast Asian cuisines. If one wants to check on its health benefits, one can perhaps look into the senior population living in Thailand and Malaysia, where people regularly consume coconut products. In Asia people are only beginning to have longevity in the recent two decades. Many years ago, coconut oil was used in Asia on children's hair or other topical application for sores or infection.

WARNING:
The key is to use VIRGIN coconut oil, that has been COLD processed. Spectrum Naturals, for instance, is no longer is reliable with this process, and has marketed some contaminated product [smells/tastes like burnt plastic], while ignoring consumer reports to them.

Coconut oil has wonderful properties not found in other oils, when used right.
Yet, can give high lab results for cholesterol:
these must be placed in context of: condition of person, what else they consume, whether they get exercise, etc., to determine if that might be bad or OK, or an artifact of modern lab results that fail to read "bad" and good" forms of cholesterol in real terms.
The brain NEEDS cholesterol, so doe the rest of the body--good fats can help this, while trans/etc bad fats make worse.
Things need to be placed in context.

What industry has been promoting about cholesterol, is skewed for profit-taking reasons, and from ignorance.
Research does support cold-processed, virgin coconut oil as beneficial in very many ways.
It is also great for external use, as it is moisturizing and healing to fragile skin, while being easily washable, and non-staining, generally very safe, and the benefits just keep being found!

As far as I know,
YES, pure 100% Virgin Coconut oil.
If it is mixed with other oils, one never knows what the results might be, or why.

AND, other oils do not have the same qualities as coconut oil [like non-staining, less residue, etc.--most oils leave too much residue on skin--oily residue that tends to stain--but not coconut oil].

Note: coconut [or any good oil] oil that has been heated too hot in processing, loses benefits, as is the case with most all good oils..
That is where some companies, go terribly wrong--industry rules state that they are allowed to process oils at something around 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
THAT exceeds body temps, which breaks down the goodies in good oils that living organisms need for nutritional purposes....Kinda like a fever in the body destroys germs, and if high enough, cooks brain cells.

Coconut oil, processed at no higher than body temps, is nicely shelf-stable, since it has lots of anti-oxidants in it, and is slightly germicidal. It can be used in and on the body. It can be used instead of butter or margarine, to our benefit.

Coconut oil is not harmful in any way that I know of. Also I agree w/ Chimonger and the benefits of these oils but as far as germicidal properties, Honey is a good one to use on scrapes and healing abrasions and such too...with no side effects. great info everyone! Godbless

Yes, tumeric is suppose to be good for preventing such diseases but once you have them there is very little it can do. It reduces plaque build up in the brain. When combined with black pepper it seems to work even better. Coconut oil is said to be good in gereral for lots of things and it is also suppose to help with brain health and inflamation which is the cause of lots of illnesses.
