I am wanting to check myself out of the skilled nursing facility myself after I was sent there by the hospital after I had a stroke, but I don't think I will ever be able to regain the use of my left side ever again. I want to be home with my family and want to know if I can leave with out any problems. Also there are issues with my care there.

If you being in rehab is going to cause money problems, then tell the billing office that u can't pay. They may discharge u. You can turn down help thru Medicaid.

You need to get your ducks in a row. Start with the physical Therapist. How are you progressing? Does it look like you will reach a plateau soon? At that point Medicare will no longer pay for ur stay.

How will not having the use of ur left side effect the way you do things. Will you need help or just take longer to do things. Can u feed and toilet yourself. Dress yourself.

An honest meeting with the Therapist, you and your family. What will be needed to get you home. You can get home therapy. Your family has to agree to have u home. You need to have things set up.

Yes, you can asked to be discharged. And make sure you are discharged. Even AMA. We have another post where family just walked their parent out the door only to find they could not care for Mom and now no facility will admit her. Don't let them tell u bills won't be paid by Medicare or ur insurance. They WILL pay for the time u were in.

Be fair to your family.

Paul, skilled facilities are not prisons, so yes you can leave. However, you need to ensure that you have ample care at home to ensure that you are safe and not putting your family in a position that they don't agree with. If they have said they won't help you, what is your plan?

Get home health services lined up and know how this is going to work, you are paralyzed on one side, there is some logistics that need to be considered and implemented before heading home.

I pray that you get your hearts desire and it works for your entire family.
