Traditional Jewish values celebrate life… and call for the community to respect and care for those at the end of life. In keeping with these values, The Martin and Edith Stein Hospice based in Somerset, NJ offers compassionate, individualized hospice care to patients experiencing a life-limiting illness and their families. Our patients and families live in our service area of Somerset, Middlesex, Northern Monmouth and Union counties in New Jersey.
We focus on making each day meaningful for the patients we serve. Our team of hospice professionals—including hospice nurses, social workers, chaplain and home health aides—works to address the unique physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of each patient and his or her loved ones and caregivers. We are dedicated to providing comfort, relieving pain and suffering, and promoting a better quality of life for as long as life remains. We also offer continuing support to families and caregivers through bereavement services after the patient has passed away. Our trained volunteers provide non-medical support to the patient and family by becoming a companion, assisting in the home and in numerous other ways.
As the first and only nonprofit Jewish organization to provide hospice care in central New Jersey, our care is based on traditional religious values that:
- affirm the dignity of life
- call for visiting and caring for the sick (bikur cholim and shituf bi-tza'ar) - promote respect for those who have passed away (kavod hamet)
- help to comfort the living (nihum avelim).
We believe that the end of life should be spent in an environment that provides the greatest comfort and sense of emotional well-being. That being our goal, our professional hospice team and our trained volunteers serve patients wherever they call home —whether it is a house, apartment, another private residence, assisted living facility or a nursing home.
