Leslie , I am a past client
My mother was a client at the Evergreen Center for close to a year. It is a wonderful facility with a skilled and compassionate staff. I have been very involved with my mother’s participation there and I view the staff like extended family. They genuinely cared about my mother’s health and well-being and have been a major support system for us during our journey through Alzheimer’s. The staff is very upbeat and my mother loved them. She called it, “ her happy place.” I dropped Mom off and picked her up each day so I got to know the staff individually and they kept me informed about how she was doing. They keep them active mentally and physically . Mom liked the social hour, singing and the snacks the best. As she became more agitated in the afternoon, I had to pick her up earlier. She was becoming disruptive so it was better for her to go home when she was so anxious. The more actively involved you, as a caregiver, are with the program, the more it benefits you and your loved one. My mom has passed on but so am still in touch with the staff. I will continue to attend the Caregivers Support meetings. The Evergreen Center is one of Delaware’s hidden gems.

I am a past client
My loved one attended this facility for 3 years. Through many visits to other centers this one was chosen as my first choice because of the large array of activities that are planned for the clients. However, over the three years I began to notice that things were not as they were verbally explained. In other words they talked the talk but did not walk the walk. There is a back yard where I was told clients would be able to spend some of their time outdoors. This never happened in the three years my loved one attended. Evergreens policy is that if your loved one slept more than they were awake or they were over active aka: constantly roaming and trying to 'escape..... they would be terminated. Aren't these symptoms of Alzheimers? I've visited facilities where the clients are nodding in chairs for long periods. This is mainly due to being over medicated. At the other end of the spectrum is the wandering, anxiety, attempting to escape and in some cases aggressiveness. This is typically due to not enough medication or not the correct medication. Every case is different however if a facility is to proclaim that they offer Alzheimers care should they not deal with the ups and downs of this dreadful disease? Otherwise, why do you claim to be an Alzheimers Care Center? Another thing.......Their advertised hours are 8 am - 4:30 but they assure that all clients are picked up by 4 pm if not earlier everyday!! They even go so far as to call Paratransit to change pick up...
