Just saw this article tonight and wondered if anyone has ever hired a home health care worker and later discovered that person has a criminal conviction.
clickondetroit/news/michigan-says-it-cant-exclude-all-homehelp-aides-with-felonies-from-medicaid-program/26728708
Note that the article indicates a recent audit discovered about 3800 "independent-living aides" with criminal convictions. It's not clear to me if this was a federal or state audit, and if the 3800 represents those just in Michigan or throughout the US.
And apparently the issues in question only apply to individuals on Medicaid.
Do those of you who do hire home health workers directly do background checks, ranging from checking department of corrections websites to hiring an investigator?
Any thoughts on how to avoid this situation, other than using an agency which would presumably have already done background checks?
