I'm watching a 2024 Movie, called The Bad Guardian, available now on Netflix, about a court-appointed guardian to an independent elder, with Melissa Joan Hart as the daughter, who fights the court system to gain control of her father. This is a good reminder to everyone to prepare POA and Medical Representative documents in advance! We often advocate in this forum for calling APS, and letting the court assign a guardian. This is a last resort, for families who are either unable or unwilling to take control of their vulnerable elders. This should not be the first step. Families should try and make suitable arrangements for their vulnerable family member before giving up to a court appointed guardian.

I agree with you in general but I don't take my facts from fictional tv shows that require drama for their story line. There are bad guardians just like there are bad PoAs and bad caregivers. In fact, based on what I've been reading on this forum daily since 2019, there's a whole lot of bad family caregivers and PoAs -- but they don't make fictional shows about them. Our family's personal experience with a court-appointed guardian was a surprisingly good one and a mercifully available solution in a difficult situation. I don't want to dissuade anyone from readily considering it as an option because of fear.
