For CWillie and other Canadians:
Generally, what could I anticipate would be required to emigrate to Canada? I suppose Medicare wouldn't cover my health care; would I be eligible to qualify for any Canadian program after a given residence length, or would it all be self pay?
I assume that other than some frigid areas it would be comparable to a retiree emigrating to a nice warm island, or another area. Other than reading Peter Mayle's experiences in Provence, and the ex pat community of Stein, Fitzgerald and others, I have little knowledge of what ex pats face when moving out of the US.
Obviously there are the issues of currency conversion, establishing a new medical team, finding a home, and more. But are Americans welcome, or unwanted? Any comparisons to health care in the States? To general cost of living? Any other suggestions?
A son moving his family into their elderly parents' home is a "deadbeat", an elder resisting downsizing is a "hoarder", certain games form an "intellectual wasteland", etc. are not examples of respecting differences.
When you endorse being disrespectful and dismissive of public figures, you also open the door to being judgmental and dismissive to posters and the seniors and family members described in their posts.
Civility and good manners are universally required for the respectful exploration of differences.
Oooooooh, a conservatory. That would be awesome! Too much money but they are so beautiful.
It was my grandpa I was referring to. My daddy built things too though. Not as much as grandpa.
There is a man that I watched on television who built caskets. It was so interesting. The monks build them here. Woodworking is a beautiful craft. I also love metal work. Here in New Orleans we have the people skilled in wrought iron. It’s beautiful for fences, balconies, stairways, etc.
You have the right idea. I don’t mind a discussion but when others turn a mole hill into a mountain taking things way out of context it’s extremely exhausting and annoying. Some people like to stir things up. I hate it. Can’t force anyone to listen to reason. This is not what GA had in mind for her delightful thread.
Only one person was upset. Should explain things. It’s nothing to get bothered about. My word...ridiculous to even call attention to it. Silly!
I will return later. I love your thread and the topic! Thanks to all the lovely Canadians on this site who gave so much wonderful information on your area. So interesting and informative.
This can go two ways. If I were to mock the cast of bozos the Dems have running, including Pochohantas who seems to have one outfit, a socialist almost octogenarian guy who looks like the professor on Back to the Future, a billionaire who looks like a deer in the headlights in a debate, or my own US Senator who whines, are you saying I am dumb? If I said Trump will have easy sailing against any of these sadsacks would you like that?
Of if I came on here dissing sanctuary cities - that is a very sensitive political topic and frankly has nothing to do with caring for our elders.
People would not like that if I said things like that here, nor should they. I would have never even considered bringing up these things on this forum but am doing it now to make the point.
Its easy to dismiss someone else as being offended when you agree with the offense, but two can play this game, and I am sure people don't want to turn this very good board into that kind of thing.
I said what I said. It's done. You and Polar want to keep it going, have a private about it.
Who cares? Let people feel as they do and you are free to feel as you do. As Gershun says, let it go already! She made one comment. She’s entitled to feel as she does. You are the one who is dragging it on.
The moderator may close a nice thread on retirement in other countries as many people choose to do. It’s a great thread and I hope won’t be closed due to an issue made over one comment.
Both sides sling mud at each other. If I lived in another country and saw the ridiculous behavior of our leaders I would make the same observation. Kind of hard not to feel that way.
Hey, I have an idea! This thread is about retiring in Canada. What do you have to contribute to that? If nothing, start your own thread about your stuff.
Actually, I don’t care what people say about political figures. It’s their opinion. They don’t have to agree or disagree. We are free to vote as we choose. I’m an an Independent, on no particular side. I’m neutral.

NHWM your extreme measures to be a peacekeeper were admirable!
Keep in mind, this all happened mostly today, and tomorrow is another day.

😂
🇨🇦 Did I get that right?
Tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow
There'll be sun!
Just thinkin' about
Tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs
And the sorrow
'Til there's none!
When I'm stuck with a day
That's grey
And lonely
I just stick out my chin
And grin
And say
Oh!
The sun'll come out
Tomorrow
So ya gotta hang on
'Til tomorrow
Come what may
Tomorrow, tomorrow!
I love ya tomorrow!
You're always
A day
Away!
When I'm stuck with a day
That's grey
And lonely
I just stick out my chin
And grin
And say
Oh!
The sun'll come out
Tomorrow
So ya gotta hang on
'Til tomorrow
Come what may
Tomorrow, tomorrow!
I love ya tomorrow!
You're always
A day
Away!
Tomorrow, tomorrow!
I love ya tomorrow!
You're always
A day
Away!
By the way, we DID notice many very nice abandoned farm houses where the land has been sold to large conglomerates... wonder what else is going on there?
I was offered an opportunity to move to Canada about 10 years ago. At times, I wish I had done it. But I would have had to come back here to care for the elders anyways so the point is moot.
Right now, the top of the list for where I would retire to is Japan. It has a high standard of living, almost non existent crime and is affordable. Japan is surprisingly cheap to live in. Especially if you take advantage of the homesteading opportunities. You can get a house for as little as free as long as you commit to live there for a number of years.
Also, in Asia older people are much more respected than here in the US. There are fights on the subway in Japan. Younger people fight for the honor to offer up their seat to someone older.
Japan would be fascinating! I had a Japanese pen pal as a kid. We wrote to each other every week for three years. It was a school project. I was 12. He was 15. He stopped writing when he got married at age 18. He had a traditional arranged marriage.
On the other hand, if Mars' soil is improved, what a great place to start a new garden venture!
Mally1, I'm guessing the farms were bought up by conglomerates for farming, minerals, or maybe subdivisions? Do you know the name of any of the conglomerates? It saddens me to see wide open lands bought up, knowing that they're going to be commercialized.
I love old farmhouses; I hate to see any in disrepair or abandoned, and I'm guessing those conglomerates don't have any Nicole Curtis types on staff to ensure that antiques and other features are saved and recycled or refurbished.
My father's house and mine both have glass doorknobs; I learned from one of the Rehab Addict shows that they really expensive now, something like $20. Just did a search, the ones I have are selling for $28.50.
Thanks for sharing this experience; I'm imagining wide open spaces, dried grasses of various sorts blowing in the winter wind, blue skies with cumulus clouds drifting slowly across the sky, and now lonely farmhouses standing out against the horizon.
